FAQs for the SANA West Rare Breeds Show, May 9-12th, 2019 during the Western States Horse Expo in Sacramento, CA.
Q: Is my horse eligible to participate?
Your equine breed must be listed on the EST list of endangered equines, Endangered Equines. and either be registered or registerable. Crosses are fine too. Your equine need not be highly trained, and you do not need to be a professional – SANA rules are different from main stream equine competitions. Conservation and education are stressed, not glitz or glitter. Even if you’re not comfortable riding your Rare Equine, you may participate in our In-Hand Clinics and Classes and there will be demonstrations and breed booths during our show.
While we encourage exhibitors to present themselves and their horses in a professional, pleasing manner, SANA does not judge: grooming, non-genetic blemishes, tack, equipment, attire or showmanship. All that is required is that the entry is manageable, and the judge is able to see conformation, movement and the execution of what is required for the class. For more information,click here.
Q: Who can participate?
A: We welcome all ages and degrees of talent! If you would like to participate in the SANA West Rare Breeds Show, we welcome you! Please come and enjoy 4 days of clinics, classes, camaraderie, and fun! There will be plenty to do, as SANA West takes place during the Western States Horse Expo, one of the largest horse expos on the West Coast.
Q: Why should I bring my Rare Equine to SANA West?
A: The Stewardship Awards of North America (SANA) West show is not your typical horse show. The purpose of SANA is conservation through education. Our competition component was created to help conserve endangered historic breeds of equines by encouraging breeders to retain traditional type, movement and the inner qualities that historical usage has honed for generations. As this is going on during the Western States Horse Expo, the largest Equine Expo on the West Coast, your Rare Equine will be seen by 20,000+ spectators over 4 days!
Q: What vaccinations does my horse need to have?
A: Standard vaccinations recommended – 5 way (EWT/Flu/Rhino). The venue has no specific guidelines in place, we recommend you vaccinate as if you are going to a regular show. All out-of-state horses must have a current Coggins test (1 year) and Health Certificate (30 days) for entry into California.
Q: What about passes for exhibitors?
A: Two exhibitor passes will be included with each stall. Day haul in’s will receive one pass with your daily $20 haul in fee. You will show your exhibitor pass for parking. All vehicle occupants will need to have a pass.
Q: What about passes for volunteers?
A: We need to know if you are volunteering before the event and will provide a volunteer pass for you for the day that you are volunteering.
Q: What are the stalls like for the Rare Breeds Show?
A: 12 x 12 box stalls – you may use a stall guard as long as your horse behaves. Each stall comes with 2 bags of shavings. You are not allowed to staple or nail anything onto the stalls, but tape and zip ties should work well. Please bring your own buckets and hoses for water.

Q: What does the barn aisle look like? Will there be room to set up displays outside our stalls?
A: The barn aisle is 15 feet and there is space to put displays, hay and tack trunks outside each stall. We recommend you stick with a display that is not over 2 feet wide. You will need to bring your own tables, chairs and decorations.

Q: Will there be another place for breed and farm booths, besides in front of stalls?
A: Yes, you can have a breed booth out in front of the barn, up to 12 x 12. You will need to provide your own tables, chairs, insta-shade and decorations. We will have a rotating horse display out there for all exhibitors to rotate horses through, to “Meet the Public”. Schedule to be announced closer to the show. If you are interested in this, please contact Tish Saare, our show coordinator at firstname.lastname@example.org. We need to know if you want to have a breed booth by April 1st.
Q: Can my horse participate in a breed demonstration?
A: Yes. If you are interested in putting together or participating in a breed demonstration, please contact Tish Saare at email@example.com by April 1st. We will need to have a script, a description of what you plan to do for your demonstration, and an estimated amount of time that you will need for the demonstration.
Q: What do I need to do before I come to the venue?
A: Deadline for class and clinic entries is April 1st. You must have all your paperwork in order and fees paid to be in the show program. We recommend that you make any camping reservations as far ahead as possible – the sites are filling up quickly.
Q: What if I only want to do demos with my rare Equines?
A: That is fine, but you still need to follow the procedures for reserving stalls, camping spots and Haul-Ins – we hope everyone participates in whatever way they enjoy most! Please let us know if you would like to do a demo by April 1st.
Q: What is the procedure once I get to the venue?
BEFORE UNLOADING HORSES
Check-In: All riders and handlers participating in the event (show, clinic, demos) must check in on Wednesday, May 8th between 8:00 a.m. and 9:00 p.m. at the Horse Expo Show Office. Early check in is allowed on Tuesday, May 7th, however you must let Tish Saare (firstname.lastname@example.org) know that you plan to check in early so that advanced notice can be provided to the venue. Late check in will be done through the SANA West Show Office (located in the Rare Breed Pavilion). You will need to make arrangements with Tish Saare ahead of time so that your exhibitor pass can either be left at Will Call or other arrangements can be made for you to pick up your pass. We would like to limit late check in numbers due to a busy show schedule, so please check in prior to the show if possible.
During check in you will sign a Release of Liability for the Horse Expo/Murieta Equestrian Center, pick-up your entry wristbands, which will give you daily access through the exhibitor gate & your final stall assignment. This is required for anyone participating in any part of the Western States Horse Expo, even if hauling in. Failure to check in will result in your removal from events & any fees incurred unless prior arrangements have been made with Horse Expo & Murieta Equestrian Center staff.
· All horses must have current vaccinations and be in good health. The venue is not planning on checking each horse’s vaccination record, but we suggest you vaccinate just as if you are going to any show.
· All out-of-state horses must have a current Coggins test (1 year) and Health Certificate (30 days) for entry into California.
· All exhibitors, show and clinic participants, volunteers and anyone working with horses must sign a Liability Waiver.
· STABLING - NO horses are to be unloaded until checked-in and assigned stabling. Horses may only be shown out of their trailer if the daily Haul-in Fee has been paid and they are checked in with event staff. Murrieta Equestrian Center and Horse Expo Inc. rules must be followed for Haul-in’s. No horses may stable overnight in trailers.
· Pre-Payment accepted via PayPal or Check made out to Akhal-Teke Association of America. NO credit cards. Sorry! Cash and Checks and PayPal via your phone only are accepted at the event.
· All exhibitors and their helpers, volunteers, event participants, and volunteer staff must follow the Murieta Equestrian Center facility rules and the Horse Expo and SANA West Rare Breeds Show rules and instructions AND have an Event Liability Wavier on file with the Event Barn Manager.
· Every breed will be assigned a Team Captain (first point of contact) and a list of those names will be posted at the SANA West Rare Breed Show office located in the Rare Breed Pavilion.
Q: Is there fencing all the way around the venue?
A: Yes, and we can close and lock the gates at night.
Q: Where is the horse trailer parking? Does it cost anything?
A: In the open area next to Arena Nine, labeled “Inactive Horse Trailers”. There is no charge for trailer parking, however all people in a vehicle must have an Exhibitors pass. Please note that vehicles will not be allowed on the grounds during Horse Expo hours. If you need to access your trailer or leave the site during Horse Expo hours you will need to walk your horse and equipment to your trailer.
Q: Where is the RV parking?
A: Next to Arena 10 in the area labeled “RV Parking”. We are trying to keep the SANA West campers together, so please ask for sites 100 – 150. It is first come, first served, so get your reservations in early. Your credit card will be held, but not charged until the actual event.
Q: Is there onsite camping?
A: Yes! Want to make the most of your time at the Western States Horse Expo? Camping onsite at the Murieta Equestrian Center is the perfect way to do just that! Bring your RV, fifth-wheel or living quarter trailer and never have to leave the grounds! Don’t have one of those? Then dry camping spots are also available if you want to pitch your tent and camp out!
RV spots and dry camping spots are now available for reservations. The Murieta Equestrian Center has a limited number of RV spots available, so make arrangements early. Click the link below and order online or call the MEC office.
For Full Hook-Up RV Spaces (Water, Sewer, Electric), please call (916)985-7334 ext. 103. If you are part of the SANA West RBS, please let them know and ask for campsites 100-150, so we can all stay together! Please note that camp sites are on a first come first served basis and are filling up fast – reserve your spot today!
Q: Do I need to buy a pass for the WSHE every day?
A: Show participants will receive two Exhibitor passes for every stall that they rent. Day haul in’s will receive one Exhibitor pass for the day with payment of the $20 haul in fee. Exhibitors will show their Exhibitor passes for parking. Volunteers will receive one Exhibitor pass per volunteer for the day that they are volunteering. Spectators will need to purchase event passes.
Q: If I’m a volunteer or spectator, where do I park my vehicle?
A: New for 2019: We will have one Public Parking lot. This lot is brand new to the Murieta Equestrian Center and is located near the old race track behind Arenas 9 & 10. Access to this lot will be on the Murieta Drive side of Lone Pine Drive and will be clearly marked and manned. Although you can pay to park the day of the event, we recommend preordering your parking on our website for half the price! The exit to the lot will be off Cantova Way to prevent any congestion on Lone Pine Drive.
Q: Can I bring my dog?
A: Dogs are not permitted at the Western States Horse Expo. If you are camping, your pets must stay confined within your assigned campsite and must always be leashed or in a kennel. Please be respectful of your fellow neighbors and other guests in attendance and clean up after your dog and maintain control of your pet.
Q: Is there turnout for my horses?
A: No, there is no place to turn out unattended. You may lunge your horse in the warm up area adjacent to Arena 9 or in Arenas 9 or 10 when they are designated as warm up arenas.
Q: Can I come and participate for only 1 day?
A: Yes, however we encourage you to stay for the entire event in order to promote your rare equine!
