Announcing ATAA/VNIIK Dual Horse Registration through the Akhal-Teke Association of America
As of October 1, 2019, the Akhal-Teke Association of America (ATAA) is the official liaison to VNIIK (closed Russian Studbook) and facilitates all purebred Akhal-Teke and Akhal-Teke part bred registrations on behalf of North American Akhal-Teke horse owners and/or ATAA members.
The ATAA provides an ATAA registration number and certificate upon receipt of a completed registration package and DNA confirmation of parentage. At a later date, dependent on VNIIK's schedule, owners will receive their official VNIIK closed studbook registration papers. Purebred Akhal-Teke horses will be recognized as dual registered. Akhal-Teke crosses may be either ATAA/VNIIK registered OR ATAA registered only (horses must be at least ATAA registered to compete for any ATAA Awards or Incentive Fund Program).
In light of VNIIK rule changes in 2019, the ATAA will no longer offer ATAA-only registration to purebred Akhal-Teke owners. VNIIK will now only accept foal applications of VNIIK registered parents. To avoid the devastating potential loss of purebred horses in the limited gene pool, please consider registering in the closed studbook (VNIIK) for the benefit of the Akhal-Teke horse population.
Important Note: You are encouraged to join the ATAA at the same time, which will reduce your registration fees. Learn more about becoming an ATAA Member

DNA Sample Collection Instructions:
Additional Optional DNA tests that can be preformed for an additional fee:
Naked Foal Syndrome (NFS)
Naked Foal results are now printed on ATAA registration certificates. If your horse has been tested, and the ATAA Registrar has a copy of the test result, the results will be printed on the certificate.
The offspring of tested parents that do NOT carry the recessive lethal gene for NFS will NOT be carriers of NSF. This too will be indicated on the offspring’s ATAA registration papers.
Want to learn more about NFS testing? Visit our NFS webpage. Not sure your horse or its parents have been tested? Check on the NFS result page. How to read the results on the certificate is listed HERE.
The ATAA continues to support NFS Testing. For an additional $40, the ATAA will have your horse tested for NFS, provided it is not the offspring of tested parents that are already proven to NOT be carriers of NFS.
Color Testing
The ATAA receives a special price for full color panel testing, $60. If you would like your horse/foal color tested, submit a DNA hair sample with the Equine Genetics submission form.
NOTE: All DNA Testing can be done from a sample collected by pulling 30-40 mane and/or tail hairs from a horse, all at the same time. There is no need to send in separate samples for the additional tests.
Transfer of Ownership Process
IMPORTANT REMINDER ON ALL APPLICATIONS
The ATAA recommends that all documents (i.e. horse registration forms, photographs, DNA sample, and payment) be sent by certified mail. We also recommend that you keep duplicate copies for your records in the event they are lost in the mail.
INCOMPLETE APPLICATIONS WILL NOT BE PROCESSED UNTIL ALL COMPONENTS AND FEES ARE RECEIVED BY THE ATAA REGISTRAR. TO AVOID DELAY AND EXTRA FEES, MAKE SURE ALL ITEMS ARE SUBMITTED IN A SINGLE COMPLETE PACKAGE.

DNA Sample Collection Instructions:
- The genetic tests for horses are performed by extracting DNA from a hair sample collected from the animals mane and/or tail. To collect a sample of your horse, first make sure the horse is not wet when collecting a sample. A sample is collected by pulling 30-40 mane and/or tail hairs from a horse. It is important to pull the hairs and confirm that the actual root of the hair is attached. The root of the hair is what contains the genetic material of your horse. Therefore, hairs that break off or cut hairs do not provide an adequate sample of your horse. The mane hair of a foal can be very fine and not have much of a root for us to work with. When collecting a sample from a young foal, it is often better to collect the hair from the tail of the horse instead of the mane.
- Once the hair has been collected, place the sample in a paper envelope that is labeled with the horse's name. It is important that the hair sample is not wet. Moisture and warmth might give bacteria an opportunity to grow which could damage the DNA.
- Download the DNA Testing form and complete the Owner Information and Horse Information blocks on the form for each horse being tested. Include DNA testing form and DNA sample with completed registration application to ATAA Registrar.
Additional Optional DNA tests that can be preformed for an additional fee:

How to take registration pictures:
All too often we get pictures with the legs cut off, hooves hidden by grass, over exposed and part of the horse shaded black, especially the front and back pictures can be unusable for identification.
Bear in mind these pictures are to identify your horse.
Bear in mind these pictures are to identify your horse.
For registration we need two full body shots, left side, right side. Hooves must be visible, and all four legs.
Front of the horse, the photographer needs to kneel down to get all four legs visible to see all the leg markings. Knot the tail so all markings are visible.
Now clearly one can see all the leg markings. Note the top of the horse is cut off...so please, send in more than one picture to capture it all.
Face markings, sent in additional pictures please, our breed is famous for them.
Blue eyes or spots in the eye, please sent us a close up.
Foal registration, please include at least one picture of your foal with the dam.
Here the photographer has the right angle to take a body shot, the lens of her camera is level with the body of her subject.
